The Traveling Suitcases

The District Six Museum remembers the 60 000 people forcibly removed from Cape Town’s District Six suburb, when it was declared a “Whites Only” area, during Apartheid. Most evictees had little time to pack after receiving their eviction notices, the majority leaving with barely a single suitcase. So we re-created these suitcases, using real evictees’ stories and treasured items that they packed back in 1966.
